A personal invitation from our Artistic Director, Brent Baldwin:

Happy summer to you! I am very pleased to announce that Chorus registration is officially underway for the Texas Choral Consort's 2009 Summer Symposium: A Shadow of Light .

Just as the interplay of light and shadow creates visual contrasts by which we see, music's contrasting elements help us better contextualize and understand the melodies that fill our world. For a fun-filled month of singing, we will examine the sonic contrasts present in the world of music through the prism of several choral classics.

Our musical journey will cover the stylistic differences between works from a wide variety of time periods - with an emphasis on contrasts residing within a single composition. Johann Sebastian Bach's breathing new life into an old Lutheran tune (Christ lag in Todes Banden) and Felix Mendelssohn's Romantic-era take on Bach's tried-and-true cantata style (Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt welten) are but two examples of how composers commingle music of the past with sonorities of their own time.

In addition, we will explore the breathtaking juxtaposition of ancient medieval plainchant and contemporary Eastern European sonorities in Arvo Pärt's stunning masterpiece Te Deum. The Symposium will culminate in two performances on August 15 and 16 with the ever-amazing TCC Symposium Orchestra.
