Israel in Egypt

George Frideric Handel's choral masterpiece Israel in Egypt recounts the trials and tribulations of the Israelites during their exile in Egypt, the plagues brought down on the Egyptians, and the Israelites’ escape through the Red Sea. Replete with musical treatments of hail, flood, pestilence, drought, and slavery, Israel in Egypt stands out among oratorios by its use of a double chorus, with the two choruses often singing in counterpoint to one another.

“The double chorus gives the work so much richness and depth of sound, and at the same time is the reason it is not often performed. In addition to the increased complexity of the music, it requires a lot of strong voices,” says TCC Artistic Director Brent Baldwin. “The result is beautiful music and stunning imagery. This is a rare opportunity for audiences to hear Israel in Egypt performed live.”
